2006 June 16 Texas Panhandle storms
Numerous high-based storms developed southwest of Clarendon, TX in the dry air so characteristic of the 2006 storm season. Yet they managed to repeatedly pass over Ashtola and Howardwick where 3" of rain produced some minor flooding. Daphne and I took some pictures of flooding and of rainbows from the west side of the storms. Later that evening, we caught up to a developing MCS in western OK. We were greeted with a somewhat picturesque HP supercell completely elevated above a dome of cold air near Sayre.

We went into Howardwick because it was in the center of the 4" radar estimated rainfall contour. Looking for flooding, we found a beautiful, though subtle rainbow with embedded anticrepuscular rays

Updraft base north of Erick 1/2 mi north of I-40 on Rt 30. A white core was a character of this storm from the southwest or the southeast. I didn't realize at the time but this storm appears to be a front flank meso type of HP supercell. The storm is completely elevated as winds were northerly for 10's of miles ahead. But KFDR picked up a nice mesocyclone aloft. 20060616

Same cell north of Sayre. It has a front flank mesocyclone HP supercell structure with
an elevated mesocyclone 'around the bend' in the outflow boundary or RFD. I swapped lenses and now I'm at 10mm (1.6x, 108 deg). The storm is passing to the north.

Evening lightning within an HP supercell

I opened the shutter for 3 seconds and picked up a nice lightning strike right on the edge of the core. This storm has a front flank mesocyclone HP supercell structure with
an elevated mesocyclone 'around the bend' in the outflow boundary or RFD. I swapped lenses and now I'm at 10mm (1.6x, 108 deg). The storm is passing to the north.
